Salt water can damage windows in a number of ways, including etching, weakening of the glass, and corrosion of window frames.

Etching

is a corrosive substance, and when it comes into contact with glass, it can cause a process called etching. Etching is a chemical reaction that causes the surface of the glass to dissolve. This can leave the glass looking cloudy, milky, or scratched.

Weakening of the glass

Salt can also weaken the structural integrity of glass. Over time, the salt can cause the glass to become more brittle and more likely to break.

Corrosion of window frames

Salt can also corrode window frames, especially if they are made of metal. This can cause the frames to rust and weaken, which can lead to leaks and other problems.

How to prevent saltwater damage to windows

Here are some tips to prevent saltwater damage to windows:

Rinse your windows regularly with fresh water to remove salt residue.

  • Use a mild soap and water solution to clean your windows at least once a month.

  • Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, as these can scratch the glass.

  • Apply a protective coating to your windows to help repel salt and other contaminants.

  • Consider installing storm windows or shutters to protect your windows from sea spray and other harsh weather conditions.
